Volunteers

Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.  Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.
- Margaret Mead

Our volunteers are the backbone of the Museum.  We could not open our doors to the public without their gift of time, energy and creativity.  We have many different kinds of opportunities available.  Below are some of the main ones…

Front Desk

Front desk personnel will greet the public (both walk in and phone), giving a welcoming first contact point.  Friendly, outgoing, and knowledgeable about the museum, its history and its programming will be the strongest asset for the front desk personnel.  In addition to providing this title page to the museum, other duties will include optional light research, transcription and administrative support projects.  This is one of the most vital positions as the museum cannot function without front desk support.

The usual commitment is only half a day a month, either from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.  We pay in tea and cookies!

Gardening

Quaker House has a very definite need for grounds maintenance.  The House features an authentic heritage herb garden which requires weeding, edging and pruning and planting on a regular basis.  In addition to the gardening, we also have a need for grass cutting.

We are also planning a Victorian garden at Evergreen House and will need garden design volunteers to help create a plan to be approved by the city.

Fundraising/Special Events

There are many fundraising events throughout the year.  We have need of many volunteers to help on the day.  Everything from tent setups to serving up strawberrys and whipped cream, from guiding people from house to house at the Dartmouth Heritage House Tour to spinning a wheel for the Monte Carlo night.   Many of our volunteers only participate once a year in their event of choice.

Programming

Help us to educate our community!  This is a great opportunity for someone on a long term basis to become involved in showing school classes or seniors the wonderful artefacts and rich history that the Dartmouth Heritage Museum can offer.  Some school programs and seniors groups come to Evergreen but it would also be great to have someone visit the classes on a consistent basis.

Graphic Design/Layout

We have a quarterly newsletter that requires layout and design work, but we also need help with posters, tickets, advertisements, display panels, annual calendar and exhibition design.  If you have a background in graphic design, we could use your skills.

Vehicle/Transportation

Occasionally, we need help moving artefacts.  Do you have a larger truck?  We could really use your help.

Cataloguing/Inventory of Artifacts

The curator needs people to help her with cataloguing of artifacts.

Research

We always need people to assist us in research requests.  There just are not enough man hours for the full time staff to keep up with this.  You can help the curator and learn much yourself!

Programming/Database

We currently have a few databases which need maintenance/programming.  Can you help?

Demo Crafts

Are you a crafter?  We hold heritage workshops and demos to raise money for the museum.  Perhaps you can teach or demonstrate your craft to help?

Committee Support

We have several committees that usually have a spot or two open…

Web Design

We need several people to help us maintain the website for the museum and refresh its content.

If you wish to join our team, please fill out the Volunteer Application Form and submit it to Bonnie Elliot, Executive Director, either by email, drop off, mail, or fax.
