‘Afternoon Tea at Evergreen’ – Special Announcement!

As you may know, Afternoon Tea at Evergreen is back for summer 2018! Until August 31, guests will enjoy a classic Victorian pastime at the majestic and historic Dartmouth landmark, Evergreen House.

But, wait… we’re going to try something different for August! The Afternoon Tea’s in August will feature special entertainment.

August 3 – Strawberry Tea

In honour of Helen Creighton’s designation as a person of National Historic Significant by Parks Canada, we will be having a special strawberry tea on August 3. It was a favourite of Helen’s and we thought it would be a fitting tribute. The menu will include homemade strawberry shortcake, cookies, lemonade and, of course, piping hot tea. It will be served in the backyard of Evergreen House overlooking Halifax Harbour (weather permitting).

Entertainment will be provided by Rosalee Peppard, an internationally recognized musician and Canada’s premier musical women’s oral-historian. She will perform her Maritime HERitage in Song –  original songs and stories of Canadian heroines and favourite traditional and cover songs.

August 10 – Guest Presenter

Does Barbie hold a special place in your heart? Did watching the Barbie episode of  The Toys That Made Us on Netflix and want to know more? Then the Tea on August 10 is for you! It will feature a presentation from the local Barbie Club. They are a group of doll collectors specifically interested in fashion dolls, including Barbie and her friends. Barbie and fashion dolls have quite an interesting history that this presentation will dive into. We encourage children (young and old) to bring your favourite fashion doll to join you for tea (and maybe learn more about it)!

The Barbie Club will deliver their presentation at the 1:30 sitting, but will be on-site for the duration of the Tea to show off some of their fashion doll collection.

August 17 – Guest Presenter

Did you know that the Dartmouth Heritage Museum has over 250 dolls in our Collection?! If you want to learn more about the history of dolls and doll collecting then this Tea on August 17 is for you! It will feature a presentation from the Mayflower Doll Club, a local group interest in all matters pertaining to dolls and doll collecting. The theme of this presentation is Canadian dolls and will feature some of their personal collections.  At this Tea, we want to see your dolls! We encourage children (young and old) to bring your favourite doll (in their best outfit) to join you for tea!

August 24 and 31 – Tidewater Trio

The Afternoon Teas on August 24 and 31 will feature live music provided by Tidewater Trio, which is made up of siblings Alistair (piano and whistle) and Lydia Maksym (harp), and their mother, Jennifer Publicover (modern and wooden flutes). They will bring their eclectic mix of classical music, traditional music, and jazz to our  teas.

Lydia and Alistair are scholarship-winning students of the Maritime Conservatory of Performing Arts. Jennifer is a multi-genre freelance flutist, an instructor at the Maritime Conservatory, and a member of various groups, including the neo-traditional band Papilio.
